William Walton (1902–1983) was a prominent English composer known for his dynamic orchestral works, film scores, and ceremonial music. Rising to fame in the 1920s with his jazz-influenced Façade, Walton became one of Britain’s leading composers through the mid-20th century. His notable works include the Viola Concerto (1929), Symphony No. 1 (1935), and Crown Imperial (1937), the latter composed for King George VI’s coronation. A master of orchestration, Walton also scored several acclaimed British films, such as Henry V and Hamlet. His music combines rhythmic vitality, lyricism, and a distinctive English character. He was knighted in 1951 and later appointed to the Order of Merit.
