A Bay Area native, Ashley Ng is a Los Angeles-based Chinese-American cellist whose musical interests encompass performance and teaching. She freelances throughout LA and Orange Counties and plays in many different facets, including live events, band shows, and session work. Though classically trained, her work varies from chamber, orchestral, and operatic projects to musical theater, indie singer-songwriter, video games, film score, and spoken word. A few fun projects she has been a part of include the Super Bowl LIII teaser featuring Magic Johnson, a video fashion show for Boot Barn, performing with Jacob Collier during his MIT residency, as well as playing on both The Golden Bachelorette and The Bachelor (Season 29). She has played with Four Seasons Orchestra and Pacific Opera Project, and she can be heard on music by Americana/folk artist Kris Angelis.
Ashley has concertized in collaborations throughout the Bay and Greater LA areas and made her international debut in Hong Kong in 2015, joining together with acclaimed pianist Stephen Wong. She is the cellist of The Apex Duo, an up-and-coming percussion-cello duo in collaboration with her husband, Caleb. Ashley’s musical studies started at age four with her mother, a music educator, and her passion for music stems from piano playing and choral singing. She is a current member of The Sterling Ensemble and grew up singing in the Crystal Children’s Choir in the Bay Area, performing at American Choral Directors Association National and Regional conferences with both groups.
She has taken masterclasses with artists such as Desmond Hoebig, Ralph Kirshbaum, and Daniel Rothmüller, and has participated in festivals including the Heifetz International Music Institute, Ashkenasi/Kirshbaum Chamber Music Seminar, and Montecito International Music Festival.
Ashley received her Master of Music degree and Professional Studies Certificate from Boston Conservatory at Berklee, having studied with Rhonda Rider. Under the tutelage of Dr. Marek Szpakiewicz, she received her Bachelor of Music degree from Azusa Pacific University, where she currently serves as adjunct faculty, teaching a variety of classes including piano, practical musicianship, music history, and writing, as well as accompanying university choirs. Aside from teaching at APU, Ashley is also involved with Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), a music education program under the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
